New day: Face of the Artist, 2011
Artists For Japan/Charity Auction: TONIGHT
The damage which resulted from the recent earthquake was great and yet, there are other disasters occurring somewhere in the world every day. If we do not address the root causes of the chaos which arises from these disasters, both natural and man-made, then our problems will continue reoccurring and their severity will only grow worse, eating further away at the heart and mind. It is with the goal of engaging people in a shared understanding of this catastrophic state of affairs that I hold this event; if an art auction can serve as the impetus for such understanding, then I am hopeful that we can make our present hardship worthwhile. I want to thank Mr. Francois Pinault, who supported the idea from the beginning, and Christie’s for making this event happen.

9 Lessons About the Chinese Art Market From the Sotheby’s Hong Kong Fall Sales:
1. HONG KONG (AND CHINA) EXIST IN THE REAL WORLD, WHERE THE ECONOMY AFFECTS THE MARKET
2. WHILE SPECULATORS RETREATED, GENUINE COLLECTORS AND INVESTORS REMAINED
3. UNDERBIDDERS PROVED NOT TO BE UNDERDOGS, AND REVEALED AN INTERNATIONAL MARKET
4. CHASING CHINA’S NEW COLLECTORS CAN LEAVE YOU HIGH AND DRY
5. BLUE-CHIP CONTEMPORARY CHINESE STARS WERE CONFIRMED
6. THE FLIGHT TO VALUE DID NOT, HOWEVER, EQUAL A REJECTION OF EMERGING TALENT
7. IF YOU GREW BORED BY THE PACE, YOU COULD ALWAYS GO TO THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN SALES-
8. BUT THE HEART OF THE MARKET WAS FINE CHINESE PAINTING
9. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER

11 Million Dollar MISTAKE!
What was thought to be a Xu Beihong (a Chinese Modern Master) has been declared a fake. The painting was sold last June at Beijing Jiuge International Auction House for RMB 72.8 million (USD $11.4 million) has been traced back to an art student who created the work during a “class exercise” in 1983.
To make matters even more embarrassing for the auction house, not to mention the international art community as a whole, Beihong ranked number six on Artprice’s top ten artists by auction value in 2010, with sales totaling $176.3 million-one would think the experets would have spotted this fake from across the room.
When buying at auction the BUYER MUST PRACTICE DUE DILIGENCE, it is the BUYER’S RESPONSIBILITY to be educated about their own purchase. Nothing is set in stone at auction. In the US we have more rights to a refund if enough evidence is present to prove authenticity is fradualant, but the expense of such research is the buyer’s responsibility.
LESSON: DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU BUY-11.4 million dollar mistake.
